For the non-screensaver app, you should allow the window to be resized.
Additionally, it would be nice if you could set a transparency level to it, and place it "in front" of everything else. Rainlendar (www.rainlendar.net) allows you to do this kind of thing with their calendar, if you want to see an example. They go a little further, allowing you to set two transparency levels, one when your mouse is over it and a different one when not.
